FROM BROKER TO BANKER
After her controversial relationship with Phillip Salvador ended a few years back and her much-talked about close relationship with former Caloocan City Mayor Rey Malonzo, Chemistry big boss Cristina B. Castillo-Decena, moves on. The CBC Group of Companies big boss and owner of 50 houses (two were sold recently) spreads her wings over a wider horizon.
Last December, Cristina embarked on a very ambitious project-she bought the Rural Bank of Norzagaray. This she did after thoroughly auditing its books, receiving encouragement from friends and business associates, plus, her 20 years of experience in a lending business. Her background inspired Cristina to venture into banking as a way of pursuing her desire to help people achieve financial freedom and free them from economic hardships through better financial assistance.
According to Cristina, Norzagaray is a fast-rising commercial and economic place with a tourism potential. “It is the site of NPC (National Power Corporation), the biggest hydroelectric plant in the country, with 37-kilometer reservoir covered with virgin forest. This alone makes it a tourism site, “says the mother of five.
She also claims that the bank is proud to have made a significant role in the economic progress of the local people and Bulakenos in general. It has helped them to be successful manufacturers, producers and suppliers of marble, pyrotechnics, jewelry, cement, processed meat and agricultural products.
With the infusion of more capital and the entry of new stockholders, directors and officers, whose integrities are beyond reproach, plus a growing depositor base, Rural Bank of Norzagaray is poised to help propel development and prosperity not only in this town and neighboring cities and provinces, but also beyond Central Luzon. Its proximity to Manila, serving as its northern gateway, allows it also to cater to the needs of the metropolis.
But for Cristina, the Bank of Norzagaray will always lead the development of the town and the entire booming province of Bulacan, which is a Hall of Fame awardee as the “Most Business-friendly Province.”
Bulacan is the third most populated province but has one of the lowest poverty incidences compared to other 81 provinces. It ranks as one of the highest in the Annual Family Income Index, Human Development Index and Good Governance Index. “If you investin the Bank of Norzagaray, it is like investing in the continuing growth of Bulacan,” stresses the entrepreneur, who earned her first million at the age of 18 in the real estate business.
What does it take to be a Cristina Decena? “I think it’s very challenging,” says the cum laude graduate of Commerce in PUP.” All you have to do is work hard, sacrifice and learn the business yourself.” She was a TOYM (Ten Outstanding Young Men) wardee for business in 2007.
As head of the CBC Group of Companies, Cristina was also given awards for entrepreneurship and Humanitarian Services in the 26th Annual Excellence Awards and the Outstanding Achiever of the Year Awards by the Asia Pacific Awards Community last year. Aside from the bank, her other conglomerates include the Cristina Homes Realty and Development Corp., CB-Star Security and Investigation Services, Texcare Industrial Laundry, Inc., CBC Foundation, Philippines Asian Lending, Inc., CBC Lessor, Inc., TYN Cast Trading and Marketing , St. Ezekiel School, Chemistry Boutique Chains, CBC Meatshop Franchising and Padua Furniture International.

THE BANK FOR EVERYONE
Cristina Decena is definitely a name that rings a bell (not just because of her involvement in a past controversy with an award-winning actor) considering how a successful businesswoman she is. Recently, she fulfilled a long-cherished dream: that of owning a bank. With her acquisition of the Bank of Norzagaray, the longtime real estate veteran says, “I got very excited with this development. It was my fondest dream ever since to have my own bank. That’s why when I bought it from its previous owner I put my heart hands-on in handling the business, specially now that it has a growing clientele.”
Interestingly, the bank, first founded in 1966, caters to not just farmers, but other non-affluent clients, such as OFWs, seamen, fishermen, and traders. “hindi kami namimili ng clients. Mula sa pinakamaliit na negosyante-kaya naming silang pagsilbihan, meron kaming iba ibang prudukto na angkop sa kanilang pangangailangan,” adds the very down to-earth Cristina.
The bank’s major aim is to help struggling business owners succeed and put up successful businesses. It usually helps through business loans. It also offers housing and car loans. Applicants are required to submit a copy of their income tax return (ITR) and financial statement. It also offers deposits. Such as a time deposit with minimum of P20,000 to open, with very competitive interest rates. The bank of norzagaray also offers real estate mortgage services.
More importantly, it’s a 24-hour bank. “The most challenging part,” says is Decena. Yet her founding of the business is fueled by her passion to help fellow Filipinos obtain stable livelihoods in the face of rising prices and a floundering economy. “ that’s our battle cry: to be of help to everybody and be instrument to making a difference in their lives!”
The bank of norzagaray is a rural bank that is now a member of the CBC Group of Companies, also headed by Decena, which includes St. Ezekiel School and Cristina Homes Realty and Development Corporation. Aside from its Norzagaray Branch, it has a branch in Ortigas that specializes in loans. It is a member of the PDIC.
